October 2007
Dear
Friends,
Fall greetings from
Silent Word Ministries!
Have
you ever
been excited about a new idea? Well, I got a good idea this
morning. I thought it would be good to better introduce our
ministry and missionaries in our monthly prayer and thank you
letters. Each month we will introduce one of our missionary
families and one area of our ministry. This will better inform
you of Silent Word Ministries.
1.
Let me
better
introduce you to our missionaries
Jon and Diane Barr. They have
been missionaries to the Deaf since 1984.
Jon was saved at Palm
Springs
Drive Baptist Church in Altamonte Springs, FL, under the
ministry of
Pastor Loyal Carlson. Diane was saved as a five-year-old in
children's church at Ripley Baptist Temple, in Ripley, WV.
Both
are graduates of Bob
Jones University, in Greenville, SC. After
starting and assisting deaf ministries across America as independent
missionaries, they merged
their ministry with Silent
Word Ministries in
2000. Both quickly adapted and helped the ministry
increase greatly
with their different abilities and expertise. The Barrs have two
children at BJU.
Rebekah
is currently a senior studying Biblical
Counseling. Joshua
is a sophomore Missionary Aviation
major. They both know Sign Language and continue to work in a
deaf ministry while at college. Their
mission theme is, "Training Deaf
& Hearing People To Reach The Deaf World For Christ."
Note: Even though Jon is president of
SWM, he still must raise monthly
support, as do all
SWM missionaries. Because of inflation and
adjustments, the Barrs need an additional $700 per
month. Please
consider the Barrs when you have a mission conference or add new
missionaries to your church budget. They are worthy of your
support.
2.
Let me
better
introduce you to our bimonthly newspaper, "The Silent
Word." In the early days of our ministry I saw
the need of a
newspaper
to the Deaf world, a newspaper published just for them with
news and information about their Deaf world. Deaf love to
read
the news of other Deaf people. About twelve years ago the
local
publisher of The Dade
County Sentinel, Eddy Gifford, encouraged me to
start a newspaper
to the Deaf. He helped and trained me in all areas of
newspaper publishing. We developed a program of ads and a
sender's club that provides for the newspaper to be sent free. My
dream was finally realized after about 35 years of ministry. The Silent
Word newspaper is presently sent to 725 churches and ministries, 116
prisoners, 631 foreigners, 42 deaf schools and 5,897 families. We
print
14,000 papers with an estimated 50,000
reader circulation. As far as we
know, this is the only
Christian newspaper that is being sent to the
Deaf world. Each paper always includes a Gospel presentation,
special articles, deaf news, missionary reports, and special articles
for deaf ministries.
Prayer request
- Due to the recent postal increase,
we must make some
adjustments in
circulation. Before
the rate increase, the paper was self supporting
from gifts, the sender's club, and church ads. We ask you to pray that
more
will join our monthly
sender's club ($10) and some will respond
with special one-time
gifts that will help until we are able to make
the needed adjustments. It is our desire that we do not decrease but
continue to increase
our deaf mailing list. Would you consider a
special Silent Word
Sunday in your church? We could send you more
information, a representative and newspapers
for your members.
We
are still excited about the Lord providing and calling us to this
unique ministry to the Deaf.
God bless you, and thank you for investing
in our unique ministry
to the deaf.
Your support and
prayers enable us to
"give ourselves to
the ministry of the Word."
Yours
for the Deaf,
Ted

Missionary Report
Praise
Reports
Jon and Diane Barr
and the SWM team
conducted Fantastic Saturdays in Atlanta, GA, and Bristol,
VA. Several were moved by the theme, "Come Help
Us." One
person was saved
in each place as a result of the meetings. They were also
involved in training more Deaf leaders through a missions retreat and
the Deaf Spiritual Leadership Conference.
Jim and Terry Bracelin
held their first
Deaf Leadership Workshop in New York. The spirit of the
workshop
was wonderful, and 35 deaf workers from the area attended.
Reed and Donna Condra
helped minister recently in Fantastic Saturdays in GA and VA.
Reed taught on the "Gifts of the Spirit." His gift is
teaching,
and he has been using that gift in teaching a Deaf Bible Study and a
Sunday School class in his local church.
Mike and Kim Green
praise the Lord for one Deaf lady saved when Mike preached a Deaf
revival in the St. Louis area. Mike also preached for the
Fantastic Saturdays in GA and VA. One Deaf preteen boy was
saved
in VA.
David and Cathy Harrison
have started their newest weekly class of the Lip Reading Academy.
They are also starting the Christian Fellowship for Hard of
Hearing. Both of these are meeting at an office in downtown
Chattanooga which the Lord provided.
Allen Snare, along
with Mike Green
and others, represented SWM at the ASL
Expo in Atlanta, GA.
Many people there picked up SWM materials to help with their studies
and their teaching. Allen also had meetings in PA, NY, and
CT. There were 2 salvation and numerous other decisions made
in
those meetings.
Paul Strosnider
reports that his parents' neighbor, Celeste, was recently
saved.
His Deaf church had good Revival meetings with Mike Green.
Paul
(and fiancee Rachel)
were able to be involved in a missions conference in MO and to present
the ministry in a couple of churches in SC.
Bill and Eleanor Towner
recently presented their ministry in a camp meeting in FL and
were involved in a statewide fellowship meeting. In September, they had
six
people saved through field evangelism.
Prayer
Requests
Jon and Diane Barr
have two more
Fantastic Saturdays this fall - a first-time one in Hampton, VA, and
another in Columbus, OH. Pray the Lord will call others to
Deaf
ministry through these meetings.
Jim and Terry Bracelin
had their first fall
Fantastic Saturday in Holt, MI. Others are soon coming up in
PA
and NJ. Please pray for these meetings and as the Bracelins
present their ministry in Elkins Park, PA and teach Sign Language at a
church in Hanover, PA.
Reed and Donna Condra
ask your continued prayer for their oldest son, Ben, as he and his
Marine battery will deploy in December - probably to California and
then on to Iraq.
Mike and Kim Green
have a deputation meeting soon in VA. Their support is now at
60%.
Marcie Rosales
would appreciate your prayer as she relocates. This move will
take her a little closer to her nursing responsibilities and
provide her opportunity to be a companion and blessing to an elderly
friend. Yet she will still be fairly close to the SWM office.
Allen Snare
will have a couple of meetings in VA before heading to Tampico, Mexico,
to work short term with missionary Jim Walterhouse. This is
one
of several foreign trips Allen will be taking within the next
year. Please pray for these and give as the Lord leads you.
Paul Strosnider
- Two are better than one, but two are also more expensive than
one! Paul and Rachel are to be married on January 5, 2008.
Please pray for them to be able to raise more support. Please
also pray for healing for several Deaf in the church that have serious
health problems.
Bill and Eleanor Towner -
Please pray for the Lord's comfort for the Towner family in the recent
homegoing of Eleanor's father, Charles Sarsfield.
SWM Missionaries needing more
support:
Jon Barr, David Bennett, Jim Bracelin, Nicole Condra, Reed Condra, Mike
Green, David Harrison, Marcie Rosales, Paul Strosnider, Bill Towner and
the home office.
