*** Making a Difference in the Deaf World, One Deaf Person at a Time *** |
The Written WordBy Dr. Ted Camp, SWM Co-founder
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet
(1787-1851)
The Founder of Deaf Education in America
Thomas H. Gallaudet became
interested in teaching a nine-year-old deaf-mute, Alice Cogswell,
and was sent by her father and others to study in Europe. He was
discouraged from learning England’s oral method and
brought back instead the manual, or sign method, favored in
France. He founded the Hartford School for the Deaf in 1817, and
wrote many children’s books. Alice Cogswell at the age of
11 years was one of the first deaf students in the first Deaf school
in America. His two sons were born in Hartford, Connecticut.
Thomas Gallaudet (1822-1902), opened a church for the deaf in
New York City. Edward Miner Gallaudet (1837-1917), the
younger son, founded Gallaudet College for the Deaf in Washington,
D.C. in 1864. The College was named in honor of his father,
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.
[These two articles are an insight into
the heart of T.H. Gallaudet who was the father of deaf
education in America and also a Christian author. Articles
condensed from the two children’s books

TO THE CHILD WHO MAY READ
THIS BOOK
[Article One] A little boy, who lived in a
large city, once wandered far from home, and could not find his way
back. He had disobeyed his father in doing so, who told him not to
go from the door of the house. At first, he was so much pleased with
the new things which he saw, that he hardly thought how far he was
going, or what he should tell his father on his return. But, by and
by, he grew tired, and sat down on a step of a house to rest. He
looked round him and saw that he was in a strange place. He had
never been there before. All the houses were new to him, and the
street looked very different from the one in which he lived. It was
a long street; and, as he cast his eye down it, and remembered too
that he had gone through many other streets, and turned many
corners, before he got into it, he began to think that his father’s
house must be at a great distance, and that he could never find his
way to it.
He thought, too, how wicked
he was in disobeying his father, and that it was this which had
brought him into such trouble. This made him feel the more unhappy.
He would have given all the pretty playthings he owned, if he could
but be at home again, just as he was a cheerful and happy child on
the step before his father’s house. The evening was coming on, and
the poor boy, as it grew dark, began to be greatly alarmed. He had
been trying, for some time, by looking attentively at every one who
passed him, to see if he could not discover an acquaintance, or, at
least, somebody whom he knew by name, and to whom he might make
himself known. But none but strangers passed by, and no one took any
particular notice of him. Why should they? They did not know that he
was lost; for he had as yet sat on the step, sad and silent, without
saying a word. It grew darker, and he could scarcely see the faces
of those who were going by him. He thought that he might perhaps
have to spend the night in the street, and the tears began to roll
down his cheeks. He sobbed, and at last cried aloud. Many persons
passing by, must have heard him cry, but they did not stop to
inquire what was the matter. Some were thinking so much about
themselves and their own business, that they had not time to stop
and be kind to a poor little crying boy....while some supposed that
he belonged to the house on the step of which he was sitting, or at
least in the neighborhood, and that his friends would soon come and
take care of him.
Poor boy! He might have sat there crying a long
time, if a kind man who passing by, and who loved little children,
had not stopped and inquired the cause of his distress. The boy told
him all about it, and did not hide his disobedience to his father.
He really felt sorry for having been guilty of this disobedience. He
said that he did, and the man pitied him so much, and was so much
pleased to see him sorry for his fault, that he told the boy...that
he would go with him and lead him safely home. What a kind friend,
and how rejoiced the little wanderer was, as he entered once more
the door of his father’s house, to get back again to the arms of his
dear parents. How would you have felt... had you been in this
situation? Would you have felt very thankful to the kind person who
took so much pains to lead you home? Would you have been truly sorry
for your disobedience, and confessed it to your father, and asked
his forgiveness, and resolved never to do it again? Would you have
been very happy indeed to find yourself safe at home, once more
under the care of a kind father and mother? Have you ever thought
that you have wandered a great way from your Father---from your
Heavenly Father---from God who made you, and who has done
so much for you, and who has been kinder to you than any earthly
parents? Every time that you have done wrong, you have disobeyed
God, and have been like the lost little boy, wandering from him.
Are you wandering
farther and farther from Heaven, that
beautiful and happy place where those who get there are happier a
great deal than the happiest little boys and girls are in their
father’s house here on earth? Are you wandering from that
delightful home, above the blue sky, where all are perfectly good
and happy, and where your Heavenly Father wishes you to go after you
die? Are you wandering farther and farther from this Heavenly
Father, who is inviting you to return to him, and has sent his Son
to show you the way back, if you will but let him lead you?
Yes, Jesus Christ is like the kind man who led
the lost little boy back to his home. He will take you kindly by the
hand, and lead you back to God. Will you feel that you need such a
kind friend? Will you put yourself under his care? Will you be led
by him to your Heavenly Father? Will you thus go to God, confessing
your sins, beseeching him to forgive you for Christ’s sake, and
praying for the Holy Spirit to aid you in doing all this?

Prodigal in Luke 15)

Fingertips For InterpretersBy Jon Barr, CT
How to Use An Interpreter - Hearing
(Continued from January/February)
Realize that interpreting is both physically
and mentally tiring. Provide adequate breaks for the
interpreter. Normally a break is required every hour, or the
interpreter should alternate with another interpreter every 20 -
30 minutes.
For visual presentations, allow enough
time for the Deaf person to see the visual and then look
back at the interpreter. The Deaf person cannot listen to the
speaker and watch the visual at the same time. Providing notes
ahead of time can help.
Be sure to thank the interpreter afterwards.
Ask the Deaf person if the communication was clear.
How to Use An Interpreter - Deaf
Deaf people should also learn how to use an
interpreter. Here are a few suggestions.
Sit in a place you can see the interpreter,
the speaker, and any visuals being presented.
Realize the interpreter's job is to provide
clear communication with the hearing person or group.
Wait for the interpreter to finish signing
before you start signing, unless you want to interrupt.
Do not talk to the interpreter while he/she
is interpreting. Ethically, the interpreter should voice what
you sign.
In group settings with hearing people, learn
the right time to interrupt, make a comment, or ask questions.
You may want to have the interpreter choose the appropriate time
to interrupt. If the interpreter is not able to keep up because
of several people talking at once, you sign to the group and ask
them to speak only one at a time.
Teach these guidelines to anyone who uses an
interpreter. -- Signing Off!

Carlene's Corner
By Carlene Camp, SWM Co-founder
Life-Changing Moments
Life changing moments have been experienced
by all of us. When I said, "I do" in marriage, my life was
changed forever. Giving birth to a precious daughter and son
were moments I will never forget. They again changed my life
forever. Facing the deaths of my parents, my sister, and some
very close friends made huge changes in me. The births of our
grandson and granddaughter impacted my life like nothing I have
ever experienced. But the greatest life- changing moment
happened to me on October 23, 1963, when I accepted Jesus Christ
into my heart to save me and give me eternal life in Heaven. In
that moment, I was born into the family of God, and my future
was made secure. Peace and contentment have been mine since that
time.
My great niece, Chelsea, was given an
assignment at her public high school to write a paper on the
most life-changing moment of her life.
Chelsea is a beautiful and talented young
lady and has had opportunity to be involved in many activities.
She has excelled in many things, but the following is what she
considered to be her most life-changing moment.
"My eyelids began to twitch as tears started
to flow from beneath them. My knuckles faded to a pale white
from my tight grip on the pew in front of me. The next few
moments that came were the most life-changing moments of my
life. My grandfather’s words of prayer flooded my ears with
joyous sounds. It felt as if the heart-wrenching moment would go
on for eternity, never ceasing. I had my mind made up from the
start and the amen was my ‘go.’ As soon as I heard that sacred
word, my muscles moved on their own. I raced down the aisle and
threw myself onto the pulpit.
In those precious seconds, with my
grandfather’s and father’s hands placed gently on my back, I
accepted Jesus as my personal Savior. The feeling of being saved
is truly indescribable but I guess it feels a little like a
heavy, wet, and mud-covered coat finally being shrugged from my
shoulders. The happy tears that flowed from your eyes felt like a
long-needed bath to wash away all your hurt and ‘lostness.’ That
is what I felt as I knelt before my Lord.
"Afterwards, I stepped over to my youth
pastor, Robert. ‘Chelsea, I’m so proud of you!’ He managed to
choke out between sobs. I couldn’t say anything. I just smiled
as big as I could and plunged into his open arms, staining his
shirt with tears of joy.
"As I walked out of the church door, I felt
as if I was floating on air. Maybe it was angels that were
carrying my feet along the ground of God’s green earth. I hopped
into the car with my dad to start our journey home. All the way
there I looked out my window at the star splattered sky and
truly felt at peace.
"When I arrived home, I ran to my mother’s
room to tell her the news. ‘Mom! I got saved!’ I yelled from the
hallway. By the time I reached my mother’s room she was already
in tears. ‘Oh, my baby!’ she gladly exclaimed as she tightly
embraced me.
"As I lay in bed that night I dreamed of what
lay ahead of me in Heaven. Roads paved with gold and no more
sorrows or tears. A place where I can spend my days with Jesus
and sing forevermore. And I knew that choosing the road that led
towards God that night would change my life forever."
May I challenge you to examine your life and
remember your life-changing moments.
Some of those memories will cause sadness and
regret to you, others will bring smiles of joy. Like myself and
Chelsea, have you experienced the life-changing moment of
salvation? If you answer yes, with a grateful heart offer
thanksgiving to the Lord. If you answer no, now is the time to
make that life-changing decision.
Teenagers today, like no other time, are
facing a changing and scary world. When I read Chelsea’s paper,
I knew I wanted to share it with others, especially young
people. You can make the same decision that Chelsea made.
You can ask Jesus to come into your heart and save you. He will
be with you to help you face all that the changing world has to
offer.
You can have peace and contentment in one
life -changing moment.
This is written because I care...Carlene |

Diamonds from DianeBy Diane Barr
Done
"If I only had this done, I would be happy."
That thought recently popped into my mind as
I thought about this article. Obviously, if our happiness
depended on just one action being completed, we would all do
that one thing and be done with it. What
is it that you would like to have done in your life?
Perhaps your home needs painting or the office needs to be
rearranged. Maybe you need to collect all the information for
your taxes and send it in (without having to file an
extension!). Maybe you have some bills to pay, a book or DVD to
return, a test to study for, a thank-you note to write, a gift
to buy, a car transmission to repair, or a lesson to prepare.
When we put off doing things, they seem to grow and pile up.
They soon become more than we can handle. Why not make a list of
things that you need to do, and get started checking things off
that list? That will bring satisfaction and a sense of
accomplishment.
Perhaps there are also some spiritual things
that need to be done. Do you have a sin
that needs to be confessed and forsaken? Don't delay (I John
1:9). Are you holding on to bitterness against someone who did
or said something wrong against you? Go to that person and get
it settled (Matthew 18:15-17). Have you thanked the Lord today
for His many blessings on your life? Thank and praise Him now
(Psalm 107:1). Have you put off witnessing to your neighbor?
This may be the only day of opportunity (II Corinthians 6:2).
Have you surrendered your life to God for whatever He would have
you do? He is waiting to give His best to those who will let Him
lead (Psalm 84:11).
Happiness will come and go with the things we
do in our lives. But there is an everlasting joy that depends on
one thing that was done. That is Christ's
death for us on the cross. He paid the full penalty for all our
sin. He made the way to Heaven open for any person who would
believe and receive. The way is open. His work is done.
Have you accepted Him? Are you saved
finished?
Don’t Delay - Get it done!

Needed More Good Deaf Leaders
By Dr. Reggie Rempel
"The Security of the Sheep"
-- John 10: 22-30 --
Sometimes Deaf people are confused about
salvation and eternal security. As a deaf leader you need to
teach them that they can’t lose salvation. They need to have
assurance of their salvation. You must listen to the Shepherd. "In
whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the
word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that
ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise"
(Ephesians 1:13) Trusted (believed) means accepted Christ
after you heard the Gospel. Then you have Christ sealed
in your heart. Sealed means your name is written in Heaven (Rev.
20:15) Remember that you are His sheep. You are the sheep and
the shepherd is the leader.
I. True Sheep Believe the Shepherd (v.
22-26)
(v. 22) "Dedication" – sweet spirit.
(v. 23) – You need to be faithful. Amen!
(v. 24) – Jews persecuted Jesus.
(v. 25) – Jesus answered them with truth.
(v. 26) – "not of my sheep" - Were not saved.
II. True Sheep Listen to the Shepherd (v.
27)
(v. 27a) – "Hear" – Means listen - Understand
III. True Sheep Follow the Shepherd (v. 27)
(v. 27b) – "Follow me" - Follow the Lord.
IV. True Sheep Receive Eternal Life (v.
28)
(v. 28a) – "Give you" eternal life (John
3:16)
(v. 28b) – You will never go to Hell.
V. True Sheep are Protected (vs. 29-30)
(v. 29) – "Father’s hand" He is near.
(v. 30) – "I and my Father are one"(I
Pet. 5:7)
As a leader you must first follow the Lord then
others will follow you.

What Means Words?
By Missionary Allen Snare
Newness of Life - means the believer’s new life in Christ. A new
life of following the Lord (Romans 6:4). When a person is in Christ
he begins a new life (II Corinthians 5:17).
Obey - an important word that simply means to
yield or submit to another who rules over you. Christians should
obey God. "Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice (I Samuel
15:22). Children should obey parents (Ephesians 6:1). Citizens
should obey the government (Romans 13:1-2).
Only Begotten - The Apostle John used these
words five times in reference to the Lord Jesus Christ as the only
begotten Son of God (John 1:14, 18, 3:16; I John 4:9). Jesus Christ
is the only Son born from God the Father (John 3:16).
Parable - means to compare to other things. A
parable is an earthly story with eternal meanings. Parables make
spiritual truths easier to understand (Matthew 13:24-30).
Passover - is an annual feast of Israel. It
was instituted by God to remember the deliverance of Israel from
Egypt (Exodus 12:13).
Peace - a word to describe the inner
tranquility, and quietness without disturbance or strife. Peace is
the opposite of war. Only God can give peace in your soul (Romans
5:1; Psalm 107:9).
Pentecost - an annual festival in Israel. It
is celebrated on the 50th day after Passover. The Holy Spirit came
on the 50th day (Pentecost) after the Lord’s Supper with the
disciples in the Upper Room (Acts chapter 2).

With Missionary David Bennett
Deaf Mission Survey Trip To India
On a recent missions trip to India, I
went into a small mountain village where I met 3 Deaf adults.
These Deaf had no formal means of communication. I worked with
these 3 Deaf for a couple of hours and taught them some American
Sign Language. However, I kept reminding the Indian nationals
that if there is a Nepali Sign Language in existence,
then they need to find it, learn it, and use it to teach the
Deaf. No one knew of any school for the Deaf or of a Nepali
Sign Language. This was a challenging time as the nationals
saw the great need of these three Deaf, not only to be able to
communicate but also to learn the Gospel. Who would take the
responsibility to teach them about Christ? Missionaries with the
Deaf are needed in northern India and Nepal. Will you
labor in this great harvest? "Pray ye therefore the Lord of
the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into (India -
Nepal - France - England) his harvest" (Matthew 9:38).

The Deaf Can
By Ronnie Rice
Put Treasures In Heaven
"For where your treasure is, there will be
your heart also" - Luke 12:34.
Treasure means something that is precious or
valuable. Some people live for things on this earth. As Dr. Bill
Rice said, "There is more to life than making a living." Where is
your treasure? What is valuable to you? I have seen some Deaf men
who treasure a beautiful car. One Deaf man collects antique cars. He
loves his 1955 Belair Chevrolet. What does he do with it? He keeps
it in his garage to look at it. He puts many hours into cleaning and
waxing a car that he does not use. In eternity the car will become
worthless. Where is your heart? What do you give your love, time and
money toward? Some people invest in the stock market that
continually goes up and down. One week they are happy, and the next
week they are sad. Tell me, where is your treasure? Where your
treasure is, there will your heart be also. What do you love?
What do you enjoy doing?
Invest in your soul. Are you saved? A soul is
valuable because it is eternal. The Bible says that if you gained
the whole world and lost your soul your life would be unprofitable
(Mark 8:36). Your soul is valuable because it is eternal. It would
be sad for you to live for things on this earth, and lose your soul.
The most important investment you can make is to be sure you are
saved.
Christians should invest in eternal things
and not earthly things. What do you seek after? Learn to be
content with what you have. Learn to invest in eternal things that
will bring great profit in Heaven. Help spread the Gospel to the
world. Support your church. Give to help missionaries. Invest in the
lives of others. Volunteer to give of your time, talents, and
treasure to help others. Volunteer to take others to church who do
not have transportation. It is a blessing to help others. What is
your treasure? What do you love? I love my wife and she is my
treasure. She is valuable to me. I love my children and grandchild.
They are a treasure to me. I love Ted and Carlene Camp. They are a
treasure to me as friends. I love preaching and sharing the Gospel
to the Deaf. My heart is serving God!

Because We Are Deaf We Can't
By Mike & Kim Green (Deaf Couple)
From Booklet(D28) "Because We Are Deaf We
Can’t..."
84. We can’t hear
noises in rest room. After brushing your teeth, you gargle with
mouthwash. Your mother comes running as she thinks you are
strangling to death from all the noise you are making!
85. We can’t hear our
husbands snore. Your husband snores and snores and snores, but
you sleep like a baby through it all, never knowing what snoring
sounds like!
86. We should not think
only Deaf people understand Signs. As you were talking about
your pastor to other deaf people, you noticed some people watching
you. Then they signed to you. You quickly wondered what you were
signing to the Deaf, because the hearing people at the church knew
what you signed. Be careful what you sign!
87. We can’t hear water
dripping. Sometimes water drips from your kitchen sink all day
and night, but it doesn't get on your nerves until you get your
water bill!
88. We can’t hear
noises of machines. While cleaning your house, your
vacuum cleaner’s cord is pulled out but you continue to use the
vacuum for several minutes before you realize that it is unplugged
and not running. Boy, do you feel dumb.
89. We can’t hear
violin at church. Once a young lady was playing a violin. The
hearing people clapped for joy, but one Deaf man said, "It looked
like she was sawing wood."

"We had a hard-of-hearing teenager interpret a
special song in Sign Language. My wife and I were in tears as
our hearts are so burdened about someone reaching the deaf in
the Paris area. There are about 400,000 deaf living in a certain
area because of special deaf schools. There are no Baptist
churches reaching the deaf. Please pray we know the Lord will
answer"

Chicken Soup For The Deaf
By Jim Bracelin, Vice-President
Keep Praying For The Deaf
Many times when we go to a church to teach
Sign Language, we find people taking the class because they have
a Deaf neighbor, friend, or family member that they want to
communicate with. Most times we teach, we ask, "Why did you
take this class?" We love to see the answer, "Because I
want to tell the Deaf about Christ."
In one class we asked the question again. It
seemed almost everyone was interested in the one same Deaf young
man. Several were praying especially for him to be saved. Some
had invited him to come to the services on Saturday night. On
Saturday night the meeting started, and it was noticeable that
all were disappointed, the Deaf young man did not come.
Then about five minutes before we presented the Gospel, the door
opened, and the Deaf young man walked into the room. After I
preached, I gave an invitation for salvation, but the Deaf young
man did not respond. Later, I spoke to him privately. He told me
that he believed the Bible, but he was also interested in the
Book of Mormon, and the Koran. I continued to stress the
TRUTH of God’s Word. He finally agreed and understood. He
prayed and trusted Christ as the way to Heaven. The young man
everyone was praying for finally stopped running from God. God
is interested in people knowing the Gospel. Keep praying and
trust God for souls! Don’t give up!

For Your Information
By Jon Barr, President
Building Your Deaf Ministry
"And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in
favor with God and man" (Luke 2:52).
It seems that most deaf ministries are small.
Often hearing pastors are intimidated by the deaf ministry. Without
knowledge of Deaf people's language or culture, pastors may tell the
deaf ministry worker, "You know Sign Language. You build the
ministry." But often the deaf ministry worker has never been trained
how to grow the ministry. The deaf ministry is much more than
interpreting. Workers should build excitement and a team spirit in
the deaf ministry. They should build lives for Christ.
As Jesus grew mentally, physically, spiritually,
and socially, so must every person develop in those areas. Every
person has needs in all four areas. Building a deaf ministry
involves building people for Christ. As you build people, you will
build the deaf ministry.
Build With Heart - People can sense when the
deaf ministry leader has a heart for the ministry. Allow your burden
for the ministry to grow. Ask God to motivate you to build the
people spiritually. Numerical growth follows a deep burden for
the people. Love the people, not just the language.
Build the Sunday School Class - The goal of
many signers is to become skilled interpreters. But skilled
interpreting is not enough to build a growing and lasting deaf
ministry. There is no substitute for learning the Bible in your own
language. Deaf people need to learn Bible truths. Even the most
skilled interpreters can be difficult to watch and can miss
important information during the preaching time in a hearing church.
Build With Skill - Interpreters are an
important part of the deaf ministry. They should improve their
signing skills by going to classes and fellowshipping with Deaf
people. They should improve their Bible knowledge through
study and by asking questions. It is important that they understand
their pastor's message so they can interpret that message into Sign
Language. After every interpreting time, interpreters should
evaluate their performance with the goal of improving the next time.
Build With Social Activities - Deaf people
value time together. Social activities allow time to fellowship and
share life experiences. Often the time before and after church is a
great time for hearing signers to learn more about Deaf people and
the world in which they live. Interpreters should regularly
fellowship with Deaf people. Regular, monthly social activities
can be used to invite visitors and strengthen the group.
Build With Vision - Seek spiritual and
numerical growth. Teach to meet the needs of the people in the
deaf class. Seek to build the whole person. Look at each person
not as they are now, but as what they could become. Every person
has potential for growth. Get the deaf class involved in the
whole church through special music, ushering, and volunteering for
needs as announced to the church. Plan a good program and work to
make it happen. Have the best deaf ministry possible.
Build With Outreach - Do not allow your deaf
ministry to constantly remain the same. Seek new ways to find and
minister to other Deaf people. If they won't come to you, go to
them. Build a ministry that will draw people to Christ
whether or not they will come to your church. Seek to reach your
entire area. Start Bible studies with those who would not otherwise
come to church. Evangelize hearing family members. Offer free
community Sign Language classes. Think beyond the walls of your
church building.
The deaf ministry is more than just sign
language. It is meeting the needs of people. Some areas cannot have
a large deaf ministry, but all can have a good and effective deaf
ministry. For more help, read SWM D29 - Developing a Deaf
Ministry and HT02 - How to Build a Deaf Ministry. Let SWM help your
deaf ministry.
