*** Making a Difference in the Deaf World, One Deaf Person at a Time *** |
The Written WordBy Dr. Ted Camp, SWM Co-founder
Happy father’s day - 2008
Attention Dads -- Please read this article! I
heard the results of a survey taken among young men. They asked the
question, "Who has influenced you the most in life?" Seventy percent
replied, "My dad." The dad is the strength of the home and
the mother is the heart of the home. The Bible clearly states that
you should train up your children in the way they should go
(Proverbs 22:6). Train them at each level of life, as a baby,
junior, and teen, so when they become adults they will not depart
from the teaching you gave at home. They may become grown and
gone but they will always remember home and your training.
Children Learn What They Live
If a child lives with...Criticism he learns
to condemn. Hostility he learns to fight.
Ridicule he learns to be shy. Shame he learns to
feel guilty. Encouragement he learns confidence.
Praise he learns to appreciate. Fairness he
learns justice. Security he learns faith.
Approval he learns to like himself. Acceptance he
learns to live in this world. Love he learns to
love others. Godliness he learns to love God.
--Unknown.
What are your children learning from you?
A Father and Daughter
As a man entered the emergency room after
suffering a heart attack, he quickly called for a nurse to call his
daughter. He explained, "You see, I live alone and she is the
only family I have." The nurse called the daughter who became
very upset and cried, "You must not let him die! I must see him. Dad
and I had a terrible argument almost a year ago. I haven’t seen him
since. All these months I’ve wanted to go to him for forgiveness.
The last thing I said to him was ‘I hate you.’" The daughter
cried and begged the nurse to keep him alive as she would be there
in less than 30 minutes. The father went into cardiac arrest and
code 99 was alerted. The nurse prayed, "O God, his daughter is
coming. Don’t let it end this way." The efforts of the medical
team to revive the father were fruitless. The father died. The nurse
watched as the doctor talked to the arriving daughter. She could see
the pain and hurt in her face. The nurse went to the daughter to
express sorrow and sympathy. The daughter replied, "I never
really hated him. I loved him."
The nurse took her to see the body of the father.
The daughter went to his bedside and buried her face in the sheets
as she said good-bye. As she started to leave she noticed a piece of
paper on the table beside the bed. She picked it up and read, "My
dearest Janie, I love you. I forgive you, I pray you will also
forgive me. I know you love me. I love you too, Daddy." A father’s
love looks beyond the faults and he loves his children
unconditionally. He does not love his children because they do good
or bad, but he simply loves them unconditionally because they are
his children. This is a father’s love.
A Father and Son
An orphaned father confessed to his son, "Son,
you don't understand. I've never had a father. I have never seen how
fathers do it. I feel totally helpless. I don't know how to be a
parent. I want to be a good parent, but I don't know how. Can you
help me?" The boy took his father in his arms and the two of them
wept together. From that point on, father and son were close. One
father overheard a group of young boys talking during "Parent’s
Day" at school. One stated, "My daddy is a doctor and he makes
lots of money and we have a swimming pool." Another said, "My daddy
is a lawyer and advises the president." Another said, "My daddy owns
a company, and we have our own airplane." The dad dropped his head
as it came time for his son to speak. Then he heard his son proudly
say as he looked at him, "My daddy is here!"
A Father and Family
God said to Noah, "Come thou and all thy house
into the ark" (Genesis 7:1). Years ago, when I pastored, I had the
privilege to say to a father who had just come forward to change his
life, "Charles, look behind you." He turned to see his wife
and son following behind him. Usually where the father leads, the
family will follow. The greatest influence on a child is usually the
father. Dad, your children need you more than anything else
you can give them. A man was walking through the snow to go to a
local bar for another drink. As he was walking, he heard a voice
from behind him. His son yelled, "Dad, don’t walk so big because I
am following in your footprints." He turned to see his son taking
giant steps trying to step where he had stepped in the snow. This
touched the man’s heart as he knew where the footsteps were leading
his son. Tears flowed down his cheeks as he slowly bowed in the snow
and asked God to save him and change his life. Do you need to change
your life and be a better dad? You cannot change the past, but you
can change the future and make days ahead the best you have ever
known. You can have a Happy Father’s Day.
My Special Prayer: "On this Father’s Day in
2008 I now promise that I will be a better dad and husband. With
God’s help, I want to make the days ahead the best I have known."

Fingertips For InterpretersBy Jon Barr, CT
Interpreting Music &
Stories
According to many interpreters’ comments,
two of the most difficult interpreting responsibilities are
music and stories. This year’s ASL Institute in July
will focus on these two topics. Here are a few things to
consider in these areas.
Music - There are three parts to all
music -- melody, harmony, and rhythm. Melody is the tune you
sing. It is the way hearing people recognize a song. In
church music, melody supports words, which carry the meaning
of the song. Harmony is the combination of tones that is
pleasing to hear. It is the beautiful part of the music.
Rhythm is the pattern and strength of the pulses or beats.
It is the part of music that causes you to tap your toe or
sway your body. Styles of music differ according to the
unique combination of these three parts of music. Each of
the three parts of music matches with the three parts of a
person -- spirit, soul, and body. Sign language can be used
to make music a physical or spiritual experience.
Stories - Why do some interpreters
love interpreting stories, while others panic at the thought
of interpreting them? The answer could be in how the
interpreter understands the parts of stories like
characterization, story line, and desired intent of the
story. Is the story used to interest, amuse, or instruct? Is
there a secondary meaning or reason for telling the story?
When interpreters understand why the story is told and learn
to divide the story into its natural parts, interpreting
stories becomes much easier.
I hope every church interpreter can
attend the valuable workshops at
ASLI.
If you have ever been challenged by music or stories, you
will greatly appreciate what you learn. Our desire is to
help you become a better church interpreter!

Live - Laugh - Love - Learn
|
Just as ladies’ fashions change from year to
year, it seems home decor and furnishings do the same. Those
people really know how to get our money. As I age, I notice I am
not so affected by these changes. If my clothes are still good
and wearable, why get rid of them? If my home decor and
furnishings are in good shape and usable, why change? Those
people are not getting much of my money. Recently, however,
while with our family on a spring vacation, we were in a home
decor shop looking for a birthday gift for our daughter. In the
shop was a beautiful display of home decor items with the theme,
"Live, Laugh, Love." I was attracted to the display and
the theme. My husband noticed my interest and offered to buy an
item. I was tempted but after seeing the price, backed down.
(I’m not stingy, just thrifty.) Later, we were in another store
and my husband found a nice wall hanging with the same theme. In
this store, the price had been reduced, so I agreed to purchase
it. Since then, I have seen this same collection in several
stores and have met ladies who have them in their homes and
offices. (So, those people are getting some of our money.)
My piece is hanging in our living room and I
see it several times a day. To some it may seem like a whimsical
fad, but in reality it has a meaningful and Scriptural message.
Live
Life begins when we are conceived. But
real living comes by receiving Jesus Christ as Savior. We
have life on earth but that’s not all there is. This life is
just a stepping stone to eternity. We can have eternal life by
confessing our sinful condition and turning to Christ, believing
He is the Son of God and that He died, was buried and arose from
the grave for the forgiveness of sin. (John 3:16; John 10:28;
John 3:36; John 1:12). Do you really want to live? Do you
have Jesus Christ as your Savior? If the answer is yes, then you
have eternal life. If you have eternal life then that is cause
to live life. Life on earth is short and uncertain.
"...ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your
life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and
then vanisheth away" (James 4:14). This tells us that life
is today. Live it! Many people are waiting to live
when they graduate, or get married, or get out of debt, or when
their health is better, or when they get a raise.
Life is now! Life is today! Live it!
Honor God, invest in others, do right, break sin habits, be
thankful, and remember that life is a gift. Don’t just exist
- Live!
Laugh
"...a time to laugh..."(Ecc: 3:4). "A
merry heart doeth good like a medicine..." (Pro:17:22).
Laugh, it is good for the mind, soul and body. I loved the
movie, "Mary Poppins." In it is a song, "I Love to Laugh." When
people began to laugh, it made their bodies float. It was a fun
song and I found myself joining in the laughter. (My body did
not float, however, the laughter seemed to cause my spirit to
float and ease my tensions.) I love being with our daughter,
Karla. She enjoys life and shows it by her laughter. It is
infectious and has influenced her family. My husband is a
jokester and is constantly making me laugh. Nicole, a
young lady who serves at our office, has a happy spirit and is
constantly making me laugh. I like being with people who laugh
because that makes me laugh. I believe Jesus Christ enjoyed
life. "In that hour Jesus rejoiced (maybe, being
interpreted, laughed) in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O
Father..." (Luke 10:21). His rejoicing caused Him to be
thankful. By the way, I believe Jesus had many times of laughter
when He was alone with His disciples. I am sure the mingling of
all their personalities gave Him great cause to laugh.
A word of warning, let’s be careful about
laughing at the wrong things. The world mocks and laughs at the
things of God and is constantly offering filth to make people
laugh. There is a right time to Laugh!
Love
"...love the Lord thy God with all thine
heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." (Deut
6:5). "...love thy neighbour as thyself..." (Lev. 19:18).
"...love one another; as I have loved you..." (John 13:34)."...teach
the young women ...to love their husbands, to love their
children" (Titus 2:4). "Husbands, love your wives..."
(Eph. 5:25). "But I say unto you, Love your enemies..."
(Matt. 5:44). When people are the most unlovable, that is the
time they need love the most. Love!
Learn
Even though learn is not part of the
"theme," it could be added. When we cease to learn, we cease to
live. Learn to be content. "I have learned, in
whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content" (Phil.
4:11). "...be content with such things as ye have..."
(Hebrews 13:5). Learn of Jesus Christ. "Come unto me... and
learn of me..." (Matthew 11:28). Learn Scriptures.
"It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might
learn thy statutes" (Ps.119:71). "...from a child thou
hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee
wise..." (II Timothy 3:15). Learn!
"Live, Laugh, Love, and Learn" is a
wonderful prescription for life. But remember, "...without me
(Christ), ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). Real living is
knowing Jesus Christ and obeying His commandments. "Ye are my
friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you" (John 15:14).
This is written because I care...Carlene

Work
|
Monday morning! So many people dread
seeing the end of the weekend and the beginning of a new
work week. For some people, work is one of those
necessary evils. They work to live. Somehow they have to
pay the bills. However, there are a few people who live
to work. They just can't get enough of it. They love
their jobs and even take work home with them at the end
of the day. They stay up late and get up early to work
on some project, and it is all because they like
working! Probably you are like most other people whose
idea of work is in between those two extremes.
When God created man, He gave man the
command to work (Genesis 2:15), and man has needed to
work ever since. Of course, work is good exercise. It is
good for the mind and body. But the Bible gives some
other reasons for work. "Let him that stole steal no
more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands
the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him
that needeth (Ephesians 4:28). When a person works, he
earns money to purchase the needs (and many wants) of
his family. This will take away any reason to steal to
get those needs. But this verse explains another reason
for work that many people may not have thought of
before. Strange as it may sound, one of the main reasons
we are to work is so we might be able to give to others.
Some people have a budget; most others have some kind of
plan as to what they will do with the money they earn.
They will pay the home mortgage, utility bills and car
payments; buy groceries and fuel; and then pay some on
the credit card bills. Some will give money to the
church. With anything left, they may go out to eat, buy
new furniture, or save money for a vacation, retirement,
or their children's education. Even as it is important
to plan for those needs, God says a motive of our work
should be that we would have money to give to others
that are in need. There are many (handicapped, shut-in,
too old, too young) who cannot work to support
themselves. We must give, that they will be able to
live. Giving to others should also be a motivation for
our work.
Don't be a person who works only to
get. Work to give!

What Means Words? |
| By Missionary Allen
Snare |
Perfect - This word in the Bible is not
the same as the word perfect today. In the Bible
perfect means being complete or finished. "Make you
perfect (complete) in every good work to do his will"
(Hebrews 13:21).
Pharisee - means separatist. These people
were very strict in their religion. They observed the ceremonial
laws as the only way to be close to God. They criticized Jesus
for breaking the laws when He ate with publicans and sinners
(Matthew 9:9). Jesus denounced the Pharisees as very religious
on the outside, but dead on the inside (Matthew 23:27).
Prayer - is always used of man speaking
and asking for things from God the Father in the name of the
Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 6:6).
Predestination - means to determine
something before it happens. God has determined the destination
of every believer in Christ and predestinated their eternal
sonship in Heaven (Ephesians 1:5). Predestination is usually
used only with the son, not the sinner.
Priest - the one who offered a sacrifice
in the tabernacle to God on behalf of the people. He stood
between the people and God. The first appointed priests
were Aaron and his sons (Exodus 28:1).
Prophecy - a prophet (preacher in OT)
would speak the mind and message of God to the people. When a
message was about future things it was called prophecy or
prophesy. The Word of God has replaced the prophets. Today God
does not speak by voice, but by verse from the
Bible.

HONOR TO DEAF MISSIONARIES
|
The Bible says to give honor where honor
is due. That means to show respect and appreciation whenever
it is earned. Do you know someone that has done a good job
working with the Deaf and who deserves recognition and
honor? Bruce Schwalbe is such a man. His wife, Ruth Ann, is
also worthy of such honor. They have served the Lord in a
very sensitive area of Asia for many years. I visited their
two ministries in January of this year. I was very impressed
with what God has done through these humble servants. Bruce
and Ruth Ann have been instrumental in the lives of two
Asian couples who serve God sacrificially with the Deaf.
First, I want to mention Pastor Anil.
Pastor Anil is Deaf. His wife is hearing. Pastor Anil was
trained by Bruce Schwalbe many years ago. He now pastors
Deaf Biblical Baptist Church which was started by Bruce
Schwalbe. The church has about 60-80 Deaf in attendance. I
was impressed with the sincerity, humility, and love of
Pastor Anil. It was a blessing for me to preach there and to
meet those wonderful Deaf who love the Lord.
Secondly, I want to mention Daniel
Mani and his wife, Veero. They, too, have learned to work
with the Deaf while under the ministry of Bruce and Ruth
Ann. Daniel and Veero have worked faithfully with the Deaf
for over 20 years now. Two years ago Daniel Mani started a
Deaf church. Recently, I preached in the dedication service
for a new building that also serves as a Deaf school started
by the Schwalbes. The church and school are called the Kovai
Baptist Mission for the Deaf. God has used the Schwalbes in
a tremendous way, for which I praise the Lord. They left the
comforts of the USA in the 1970s in order to preach and
teach the Word of God to the Deaf in their part of Asia. God
has given them wonderful fruit. Some of you may have given
financially and prayed for them and their ministry through
the years. I thank you for your part. The Schwalbes thank
you. The Deaf of Asia thank you. But most of all, the Lord
Jesus Christ Himself thanks you for your part in fulfilling
the Great Commission.
Have you ever thought about the
possibility that God could be calling you to serve Him on
some foreign field to reach other Deaf? What could God do
with you in the next 20 or 30 years of reaching Deaf people
in another country? SWMI is seeking for dedicated families
who will give their lives to preach the Gospel to the Deaf
and hearing in needy places of the world.
Are you one of those to whom God is
speaking?

The Deaf Can
By Ronnie Rice
Deaf Can Be Good Fathers
Are you a good father? As a father
you are responsible for the leadership of your family. You
should be a good example. A good father will pray for his
family. I know some Deaf men who are mean and not good
fathers and husbands. It is wrong to hit (abuse) your
family. It is called physical abuse, and it is
against the law. The best thing a father can do for his
children is to love their mother and love them.
It is sad that some fathers waste
money on beer, whiskey,
gambling and drugs. The money
could be used to take care of their families.
It is a
shame!
Fathers should know that children are a gift from God.
Fathers are
commanded to bring up
their children in
the way they
should go (Proverbs 22:6). If you are a father, you should
love your children. Love them and teach them the things of
God. The father should lead in devotions and prayer. The
father is responsible for the family. He should be a good
leader and take his family to church and be a good
Christian. The
greatest gift you can give your children is yourself. Your
children need you more than anything else.
It is sad that some Deaf fathers love
drinking, gambling, Internet, and sex sin more than
their family. These fathers waste their lives on the wrong
things. The father should be loved and honored in the home.
He should represent Christ to his family. Deaf men can be
good fathers and raise their children in a good Christian
home. I am Deaf and I love my family. Your children need you
more than anything else you can give them. Deaf men can
be good fathers.
Happy Father’s Day

Because We Are Deaf We Can't
By Mike & Kim Green (Deaf Couple)
90. We can’t hear
fireworks. I notice that
hearing people cover their ears. We don’t need to
cover our ears when watching fireworks on July 4th to
celebrate our country’s freedom.
91. We can’t
hear the nurse call the names of
next patient. You are in a
doctor's office. You try to watch for your name to be
called, but sometimes you read a magazine and don’t see the
nurse call names. She calls your name again and again, but
you don’t hear it. Sometimes you can lose your place in
line, and sometimes the nurse will come over and point to
you as if you were a little child who didn’t want to see the
doctor.
92.We
can’t hear announcements.
At the airport they make announcements on the speakers for
hearing people. A Deaf missionary was standing at the
right gate, but he noticed all the people leaving the room.
He could not hear any announcments so he decided to follow
them. When he got to the other gate he saw the flight
schedule change on the screen. As he boarded the plane, he
was happy that he followed the people.
93. We can’t
hear screams. A Deaf
man who is a fan of high school basketball screams and does
not know that he is very, very loud. He noticed that hearing
fans stopped sitting close to him. His screaming hurt their
ears. I sat beside him, and it did not bother me. It did not
harm my ears. We were both Deaf and enjoyed the game.

Five Things You Should Know
1.
Know
You need to be saved because you
will die.
"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by
sin; and so death passed upon all men,
for that all
have sinned" (Romans
5:12). All includes
you.
You will die!
2.
Know
You cannot save yourself:
"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to
His mercy He saved us."
(Titus 3:5).
3.
Know only
Jesus can save you. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the
life: no man cometh unto the Father,
but by me"
(John 14:6). No one
is saved without
Jesus. No One!
4. Know you
must pray and accept Jesus to save you. "But as many as
received Him
(Jesus), to them gave he power to become the sons of God" (John
1:12). Will you now
receive Jesus as your Saviour?
5.
Know you need to
Do it now!
Tomorrow may be too late! "Now
is the accepted time...now
is the day
of salvation" (II Corinthians
6:2).
[ ] "Yes, I now pray and accept Jesus Christ to be my Savior. I believe He
died, rose, and is now alive to save me. I want to go to Heaven.
Amen." --
"I know I am now saved."

our hearts are so burdened about someone reaching the deaf in
the Paris area. There are about 400,000 deaf living in a certain
area because of special deaf schools. There are no Baptist

Chicken Soup For The Deaf

A Frontier Deaf Camp in Ukraine
|
We were privileged to be a part of the
first Christian Deaf Camp ever held in Ukraine.
We studied Ukrainian Sign Language (USL), and were ready to
serve the Lord. The first day of camp we knew we were
in trouble. A group of Deaf boys came running over to us
with frantic looks on their faces, tapping what looked like
the letter "U" in America on their foreheads. We
looked at each other and none of us had any idea what that
sign was in Ukraine. In frustration, the leader of the
little group said the word the best he could in Ukrainian
language, which none of us knew. When he saw that was
unsuccessful, he spelled the word for us (again in
Ukrainian). Finally, in desperation they ran away from us.
We watched them going, and finally realized they were
looking for a toilet. I motioned to show them where
it was. They all returned with big smiles and the sign
"thank you," which we knew! We realized that if anything
were to happen that week, it had to be a work of God! We
praise the Lord, all but one of those original kids prayed
to receive Jesus Christ as Savior before the week was over!
It goes to show that God speaks all the languages of the
world. He does not speak to EARS. He speaks to
HEARTS! What an awesome privilege to serve this Great
God! Why not tell someone about Him today?

What A Pastor Needs To Know
About The Deaf Ministry
|
Sometimes pastors feel awkward around the
deaf ministry. Questions arise like, What are the Deaf people
saying? What is the interpreter saying? Is the sermon being
interpreted accurately? Are the workers teaching the Deaf people
right? The goal should be to have an effective deaf ministry
reaching all Deaf people.
Learn A Few Signs - The pastor may not
know sign language, but by learning a few signs, he can greet
and welcome Deaf people. Start by learning "Good morning,"
"Happy to see you," and "I love you." Deaf people will greatly
appreciate your concern.
A Church Committed - The deaf ministry is
a church ministry. Never build the deaf ministry on just one
person. If the music or youth leader moved away, the church
would get a replacement. These ministries are commitments the
church will continue. The church should be committed to the deaf
ministry and should develop several workers who can interpret
and teach.
A Missionary Ministry - The deaf ministry
is inside the church, but it uses a different language and
culture. Much time and effort is required to produce a fruitful
deaf ministry. Do not expect to have a large deaf ministry
quickly. Workers must become skilled in sign language,
interpreting, and Deaf culture, which can take several years.
The deaf ministry is a minority ministry. Nevertheless, "Go into
ALL the world" includes the Deaf.
More Workers - The deaf ministry requires
more workers than other ministries. Three or four workers may be
required to have a small deaf ministry. It is difficult for one
interpreter to teach the Sunday Bible class, interpret the
songs, interpret the sermon, and then do the same for the
evening service. The interpreter cannot listen and benefit from
the sermon while he is interpreting. It is wise to develop
several interpreters who can share responsibilities.
Advanced Preparation - It is extremely
helpful for the interpreter to have the order of service several
days early. A song can require up to two hours of preparation
and practice. More songs means more preparation needed. Just as
the hearing service is planned, practiced, and presented well,
the interpreters should spend time making their part of the
service be the best possible.
More Than Interpreting - Effective deaf
ministries must seek to develop Deaf people into strong
Christians who can serve the Lord. Pastors may not know sign
language, but they can train workers to help Deaf people learn,
grow, and develop.
Qualified Workers - Just because a person
knows sign language does not mean he is qualified to interpret
or teach. The church has standards that workers must meet before
being asked to teach or lead in worship. Interpreters should
meet the church qualifications before teaching or interpreting.
Trained Leaders - Deaf ministry leaders
know sign language, but may lack leadership skills. Train and
develop leaders to become more effective through strengthening
their leadership.
Different Culture - Deaf culture involves
a different viewpoint on many things. Many differences can be a
positive influence on the hearing congregation. Learning about
Deaf culture makes pastors more effective in teaching and
preaching to Deaf people. (Get "Understanding Deaf Culture" -
SWM - $1)
More Training - Pastors should require
deaf ministry workers to improve their signing and ministry
skills. SWM offers the American Sign Language Institute (ASLI)
workshop annually. The church should consider sending deaf
ministry workers to ASLI every year. Personally, I have been
signing since 1976 and attend several workshops each year to
continually improve my skills.
Utilize the Deaf Ministry - The deaf
ministry can be a blessing to the whole church. Have special
music signed by a Deaf person or a Deaf Choir. Train Deaf men to
become ushers. Teach Deaf people to give of themselves so they
can become better Christians.
Deaf ministries can become strong, and Deaf
people can become good Christians. It is important that pastors
stay involved in and aware of the deaf ministry. For more
information visit our website, www.SilentWordMinistries.org,
call or write SWM, or send email to Jon@SilentWord.org.
